Stripe charges 2.9% plus 30 cents for each successful domestic card payment in the US, based on its published pricing. On a $100 payment that is a $3.20 fee, so you keep $96.80. International cards add 1.5% and currency conversion adds 1%. Enter your own rates above if your plan is different.

The formula

Fee = amount x (percentage + add-ons) + fixed fee
You receive = amount - fee
To receive a target amount: charge = (target + fixed fee) / (1 - percentage)

Worked example

Amount: $100.00, domestic card. Rate: 2.9% plus $0.30.

Percentage part: $100.00 x 0.029 = $2.90. Add the fixed fee: $2.90 + $0.30 = $3.20.

You receive $100.00 - $3.20 = $96.80. The effective rate is 3.20%.

International card with currency conversion: 2.9% + 1.5% + 1% = 5.4%. $100.00 x 0.054 = $5.40, plus $0.30 = $5.70, so you receive $94.30.

Reverse: to receive exactly $100.00 on a domestic card, charge $103.30. Check: $103.30 x 0.029 = $3.00 (rounded), plus $0.30 = $3.30, and $103.30 - $3.30 = $100.00.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Stripe charge per transaction?

Stripe's US pricing page lists 2.9% plus 30 cents for each successful domestic card payment. Manually entered cards add 0.5%, international cards add 1.5%, and currency conversion adds 1% when it is required. Custom pricing may apply to large businesses.

How do I calculate Stripe fees?

Multiply the payment by 2.9%, then add 30 cents. On a $100 payment that is $2.90 plus $0.30, which is a $3.20 fee. You keep $96.80. For international cards add another 1.5% of the payment, and 1% more if currency conversion is needed.

How much should I charge to cover Stripe fees?

Add 30 cents to the amount you want to keep, then divide by 0.971, which is 1 minus 2.9%. To keep $100.00, charge $103.30. The How much to charge option above does this for any amount and any rate.

Does Stripe charge more for international cards or currency conversion?

Yes. Stripe's US pricing page lists an extra 1.5% for international cards and an extra 1% if currency conversion is required. Tick both add-ons above for an international card that also needs conversion. The total is then 5.4% plus 30 cents.

Does Stripe return its fee when I refund a customer?

Per Stripe's pricing page, the payment processing and currency conversion fees from the original transaction are not returned when you refund a payment. Check Stripe's page or your dashboard for the current rule, since it can change.
