For a US business account, PayPal charges 3.49% plus $0.49 on a standard checkout payment, or 2.99% plus $0.49 on card payments, based on PayPal's published rates. On a $100 checkout payment that is a $3.98 fee, so you keep $96.02. International payments add 1.50%. Confirm the rates in your own account.

The formula

Fee = amount x (percentage + add-ons) + fixed fee
You receive = amount - fee
To receive a target amount: charge = (target + fixed fee) / (1 - percentage)

Worked example

Amount: $100.00 paid with PayPal Checkout. Rate: 3.49% plus $0.49.

Percentage part: $100.00 x 0.0349 = $3.49. Add the fixed fee: $3.49 + $0.49 = $3.98.

You receive $100.00 - $3.98 = $96.02. The effective rate is 3.98%.

Reverse: to receive exactly $100.00, charge $104.12. Check: $104.12 x 0.0349 = $3.63, plus $0.49 = $4.12, and $104.12 - $4.12 = $100.00.

Frequently asked questions

How much does PayPal charge to receive money?

For US business accounts, PayPal's fee page lists 3.49% plus a fixed fee of $0.49 for PayPal Checkout, Guest Checkout and Pay with Venmo, and 2.99% plus $0.49 for standard credit and debit card payments. QR code payments are 2.29% plus $0.09. Your own account may have different rates.

How do I calculate PayPal fees?

Multiply the payment by the percentage rate, then add the fixed fee. On a $100 checkout payment at 3.49% plus $0.49, the fee is $3.49 plus $0.49, which is $3.98. Subtract it from the payment to get what you receive: $96.02.

How much should I charge to receive an exact amount after PayPal fees?

Add the fixed fee to the amount you want to keep, then divide by one minus the percentage rate written as a decimal. To keep $100 at 3.49% plus $0.49, divide $100.49 by 0.9651, which gives about $104.12. Use the How much to charge option above to do this for any amount.

Does PayPal charge extra for international payments?

PayPal's fee page lists an additional 1.50% on international commercial transactions. Currency conversion is a separate spread, listed as 3.00% for most transactions and 4.00% for some cases such as paying in a currency other than the listed one. Tick the add-on boxes above to include them.

Is the PayPal fixed fee always $0.49?

No. The $0.49 fixed fee applies to payments received in US dollars. PayPal lists a different fixed fee for each other currency, for example 0.39 GBP and 0.49 CHF. If you receive another currency, type your fixed fee into the field.
